Even the most basic daily activities in Islam are linked to remembering Allah. Saying the Dua before bathroom is one of these lovely customs. This brief prayer instructs Muslims to keep spiritual awareness in all facets of life and request protection from danger. We uphold the Sunnah and deepen our relationship with Allah by reciting it daily.
Dua Before Bathroom

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) advised us to perform a little prayer for protection before using the restroom, known as the dua.
According to Anas bin Malik, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah entered the toilet, he would say: ‘A‘ūdhu billāhi min al-khubuthi wal-khabā’ith’”.
To put it another way, before emptying himself, the Prophet would ask Allah to shield him from impure or bad forces. Muslims are urged to adhere to this Sunnah (Prophetic practice) whenever they use a toilet.
Arabic Text, Transliteration, and Translation of Dua Before Bathroom:
Arabic: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
Transliteration: Bismillāh, Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika mina l-khubthi wal-khabā’ith
Translation: “In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the male and female devils (evil beings).”
We start this petition with “Bismillāh,” which means “In the name of Allah,” before requesting protection from Allah.
The dua’s primary idea, “Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika mina l-khubthi wal-khabā’ith,” means “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from al-khubth wal-khabā’ith.”
Al-khubth wal-khabā’ith is sometimes translated as “all kinds of evil impure things” or as “the male and female devils.”
In essence, we are pleading with Allah to protect us from any malevolent or dangerous beings (such as shayāṭīn, or demons) that dwell in filthy areas like restrooms.
In order to remember Allah and ask for His protection in a time and location when one will be vulnerable and unable to recall Him audibly, the Dua before bathroom should be silently said right before using the lavatory.
Why Is It Important to Dua Before Using the Bathroom?
In Islam, it is crucial to recite the Dua before using the restroom to ask Allah for protection from the evil spirits (devils and jinn) that live in filthy, remote, or contaminated areas. It transforms a common everyday activity into an act of devotion while serving as a barrier for both physical and spiritual solitude.
Important Justifications for the Dua Before Bathroom:
- Protection against Unseen Harms: According to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), jinn and demons use restrooms; this prayer acts as a barrier.
- Following the Sunnah: It shows humility and obedience by adhering to the prophetic teachings and customs.
- Continuous Remembrance of Allah: It acts as a prompt to keep in touch with Allah, even in private or everyday situations.
- Spiritual Hygiene: The Dua Before bathroom is a method of spiritual washing from the pollutants and grime of the surroundings, just like the toilet is for physical cleanliness.
Entering with the left foot first is advised in order to take shelter in Allah and resist the temptation of worldly or demonic forces.
When Is the Right Time to Say It?

Recite the Dua Before bathroom, right before you enter the restroom, either at the doorway or right before you go inside. Saying it with the left foot before entering is sunnah, and it is advised whether you are taking a shower or using the restroom.
Important Information:
When: Just before entering, as it serves as a barrier to keep off jinn (unseen beings).
“Bismillaah. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith” (In the name of Allah) is what you should say. I want Allah to shield me from the male and female devils.
Procedure: Use your left foot to enter.
If forgotten: Since it is intended to be a silent invocation, it can be uttered silently once inside.
To ensure protection from invisible damage, this prayer is advised each time you enter a restroom.
Advantages of Teaching Children Dua Before Bathroom
Teaching kids the dua before using the restroom fosters attentiveness and cleanliness, instills daily prophetic Sunnah behaviors, and offers spiritual protection against Shayateen (devils). It teaches fundamental Islamic hygiene customs and cultivates a continuous relationship with Allah, transforming a commonplace activity into an act of devotion.
Key Advantages of Teaching Kids Bathroom Duas:
- Protection from Evil: Devils are thought to visit restrooms, thus this particular prayer serves as a barrier against them.
- Following the Sunnah: It encourages kids to emulate the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by rewarding them for upholding Islamic standards of behavior, spirituality, cleanliness, and etiquette.
- Consciousness of Allah (Taqwa): It reminds kids to depend on Allah for protection even in private, everyday situations and strengthens the practice of dhikr (remembrance) in daily life.
- Routine and Mindfulness: It creates a practice of examining oneself before entering an area, connecting spiritual cleanliness with personal hygiene.
- Structure and Discipline: From an early age, children are exposed to Islamic discipline, which is frequently reinforced by visual aids like posters on the restroom door.
How to Instruct It:
- Repetition: Even if they are very young (ages 1–5), read the dua aloud to them frequently until they commit it to memory.
- Visual Prompts: Remind them to say it and explain the importance of entering with the left foot using posters or flashcards.
- Explain briefly that the Dua before bathroom requests Allah to protect us from dangerous, invisible, and unseen entities.
